Successful education of our students is the major goal in academia. Oftentimes, its accomplishment is hindered by unintentional miscommunication between instructor and students. This can lead to frustration on both sides of the classroom.

This workshop will highlight the importance of clearly defining learning objectives to properly convey expectations and enhance performance. By making small changes in your objectives, such as using meaningful verbs instead of vague ones (i.e. “understand or “master), students can be learners that are more efficient.

The creation of well-designed learning objectives lends itself to the development of better assessment criteria. A useful tool to help compile both criteria and grading scale descriptors in a transparent and objective manner is rubrics.

Through examples and exercises, this session will provide attendees with the basic knowledge to create and develop their own learning objectives and rubrics.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
1. Distinguish between the contents and topics of a course and its learning objectives.
2. Define appropriate learning objectives for a course.
3. Create rubrics to clearly present goals and expectations for assignments to improve communication with students and better grading consistency
