Development of In-House Tissue Equivalent Bolus

Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to develop in-house tissue equivalent bolus material for the External Beam Radiotherapy and assess the dosimetric properties.

Methods: The new bolus has been fabricated successfully with the size of 30x30cm2 in different thicknesses like 0.5cm, 1.0cm, 1.5cm and 2.0cm. Ionization measurements have been made in the Telecobalt, Varian clinac for all electron and photon beams. The fabricated 0.5cm bolus were place over the PTW plastic water phantom with and without bolus on the surface. The same procedure were repeated for 1.0cm, 1.5cm, 2.0cm and also for the imported bolus for the dosimetric comparsion. The measurements were used SSD setup with a parallel plate chamber for electrons and SAD setup with a thimble chamber for photons.

Results: Evaluation of our results were evident that showed that mass and electron densities of newly developed bolus are similar to those of water and soft tissue. Furthermore, transmission factors are close to those of water. The dosimetric properties of bolus material were determined by comparison with imported bolus of various thicknesses, using Gamma Photon, X-ray photon and electron beams of various energies. Since the bolus has both an electron build-up characteristic and a density closer to that of water than imported bolus, it is anticipated that this flexible tissue substitute will find wide acceptance in radiotherapy.

Conclusion: According to the results of this study and other properties such as flexibility and harmlessness, it seems that newly developed bolus is a suitable material to be used as bolus in radiotherapy. Newly developed bolus are nontoxic, flexible and soft. It does conform nicely to patient’s contour while maintaining good uniformity to thickness.
