Advanced programming is supported by several modern treatment planning systems (TPS) through scripting platforms such as command-line interface (CLI) or application programming interface (API). With great potentials for automation and standardization, many medical physics groups have developed computer applications targeting treatment plan generation, plan quality evaluation and TPS testing. For planning process, many common tasks such as beam placement, constraints setting and optimization can be driven by script programming. Automated plan parameter verification and plan quality evaluations have also been implemented by different groups. Moreover, TPS evaluations such as tests performed in commissioning and routine QA could be automated and standardized using script programming in a similar manner. Prior to development and implementation of these automated processes, it is crucial that physicists understand the benefits and limitations of scripting in these settings. This presentation is aimed at highlighting the emerging trends in advanced programming in TPS, describing experience and challenges during implementation and stimulating additional developments and research in this area.
