Accreditation programs are an important means to ensure the public that imaging facilities/departments provide the highest level of image quality and patient safety. Since 1987, the American College of Radiology (ACR) has accredited more than 38,000 facilities in 10 imaging modalities. The accreditation programs including the Ultrasound/Breast Ultrasound, MRI/Breast MRI, Nuclear Medicine/PET, and CT programs are one option to help facilities meet federal (Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act), state, and third-party payer criteria. The process documents that facilities meet requirements for equipment, medical personnel, clinical and technical image quality, ongoing quality control/assurance, and assuring patient and personnel safety.

The Diagnostic Medical Physicist is an essential member of the clinical team in pursuing accreditation. Since the ACR accreditation programs are continually reviewed and updated in order to keep pace with new technologies and practices, it is imperative that the clinical Diagnostic Medical Physicist keep up-to-date on current program requirements.

This session consists of presentations from physics subcommittee chairs/members in four ACR accreditation modality programs: Ultrasound/Breast Ultrasound, MRI/Breast MRI, Nuclear Medicine/PET, and CT. Each speaker will discuss the general aspects of the modality program and address any recent changes to the requirements.

Learning Objectives:
1. To understand the current Ultrasound and Breast Ultrasound program and requirements.
2. To understand the requirements of the ACR MR Accreditation program. The discussion will include accreditation of whole-body general purpose magnets, dedicated extremity systems, and breast MRI accreditation.
3. To understand the requirements of the ACR nuclear medicine accreditation program, the role of the physicist in the process, and common pitfalls in data acquisition and submission.
4. To understand the requirements of the ACR CT accreditation program, including updates to the QC manual and accreditation process.
