Room: Room 207

MRI, CT, and mammography are complex imaging modalities. All suffer from many artifact producing failure modes. This session will review the basic artifacts for each modality but focus on the types of artifacts common to the clinic, but not commonly taught in a standard curriculum. Recent advances in both hardware and image acquisition techniques create pathways for new artifacts and these new artifact types will be discussed for each modality. For MRI, we will present artifacts arising specifically from advances in image acquisition techniques (e.g., parallel imaging, view-sharing, radial imaging, fat-water imaging, diffusion weighted imaging, etc) and hardware (high field, wide/short bore, multi-channel transmit and receive, etc). For CT, we will present artifacts related to dual energy, gated scanning modes, and an approach to separate artifact from pathology. For mammography artifacts common to digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and synthesized 2D (s2D) imaging will be presented.

Learning Objectives:
1. Apply real world tips and tricks for separating artifact from pathology in your daily practice
2. Learn how to triage CT/MRI/Mammo artifacts to facilitate scanner repair
3. Understand the underlying physical source of artifacts in emerging advanced acquisitions
4. Learn ways to minimize or control artifacts via patient positioning or system parameter adjustment
