Quantitative Imaging: Ultrasound and Imaging Tools and Data Pipelines

B Garra1*, (1) Food and Drug Administration, Silver Spring, MD

Presentations

(Tuesday, 7/31/2018) 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM

Room: Davidson Ballroom B

There are many examples of ultrasound-based quantitative imaging applications, including techniques for assessment of lesion size and volume, blood flow, liver fibrosis, etc. To achieve the full potential of such measures, however, the sources of bias and variance must be identified and mitigated to the extent possible. The remaining bias and variance in the measurements define the confidence intervals of those measurements. If these values are known, clinical trial applications can be implemented with appropriate, but minimum, sample sizes, and clinical applications can be implemented with confidence that the measurements will be consistent across time, devices, and sites. This session of the Quantitative Imaging Specialty Track will address the sources and mitigation of ultrasound quantitative imaging measurement errors in an opening plenary presentation. The plenary presentations will be followed by five proffered presentations addressing ultrasound quantitative imaging applications as well as imaging tools and data pipelines that have been developed and are being applied in a variety of quantitative imaging biomarker applications across multiple modalities.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the common sources of bias and variance in quantitative imaging ultrasound applications and the options for mitigating such sources.
2. Appreciate some of the current applications of ultrasound-based quantitative imaging biomarkers.
3. Understand the potential and some of the current applications of quantitative imaging tools and data pipelines in clinical trial and patient care applications.
