Room: Davidson Ballroom A

Proton pencil beam scanning (PBS) technology has quickly become a mainstream technique to deliver highly conformal proton therapy. However, the optimal use of PBS methods is still new to many medical physicists. Technical challenges exist for dose measurement, commissioning of dose calculation algorithms, quality assurance, deployment of the technology in clinical practice. Other operational issues, such as staffing models, workflow differences and downtime management strategies may produce additional, unexpected complexities. In this educational symposium, three proton physicists will first present their experience in PBS commissioning and clinical applications, followed by a panel discussion to share their best practices and lessoned learned and address questions from the audience.

Learning Objectives:
1. Learn the nuances of PBS commissioning, machine QA, and patient QA
2. Understand PBS dose calculation algorithms along with their limitations.
3. Method to use PBS and IMPT to the fullest potential for patients in the clinic
4. Discuss operation issues, such as staffing model, downtime management etc.
