Purpose: In patients undergoing nuclear cardiology, anxiety and stress are among the most unpleasant experiences that may cause motion artifact and decrease quality of imaging. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study aimed to assess the effect of plain music and binaural beat embedded music on anxiety, tedium and subsequent motion artifact in patients undergoing MPI.

Methods: This prospective study comprised 290 patients from April to October 2017 which were divided into three groups: Group I: patients who listened to the music with binaural beat; Group II: patients who listened to the music intervention and Group III: control group. All patients and researchers were blinded. In our study, we evaluated anxiety level by DASS questionnaire and heart rate monitor respectively, and motion artifacts was assessed by nuclear medicine physician as well. Kruskal-Wallis, ANOVA, TUKEY, Pearson Chi-Square, Paired samples and Wilcoxon Test were used for statistical analyses by SPSS 24.

Results: DASS score significantly indicated lower scores in the MBB group compared with the both MI and control groups (PË‚0.001). The heart rate of patients significantly decreased in the MBB group in comparison with the MI (p=0.003) and control groups (P=0.004). The study revealed significantly decreased motion artifact in the MBB group compared with the MI (PË‚0.001) and control (P=0.002) groups.

Conclusion: listening to binaural beat embedded musical intervention can significantly cause lower anxiety level, heart rate and consequently reducing motion artifact which can improve quality and prevent repetition of imaging.
