Purpose: Over the past few years, academic programs in medical centers have embarked on the development of mentoring programs that incentivize career advancement for faculty. An advancement program for allied health and clinical staff is equally important to ensure the professional development, retention of quality staff and maintenance of high morale among clinical team members. Led by physics staff, our departments have adapted a mentoring toolkit tailored to the professional development of allied health and clinical staff.

Methods: Components of the mentoring toolkit include administrative and program organization comprising the assembly of committees for the recruitment, development and review of the program. Members of the program are mentored throughout the year and embark in several academic projects to fulfill the requirements of the program. A few examples of these categories include continuing education, clinical research and developing leadership within the department and the community. Specific areas of interest for our team are the development of collaboration, communication, advocacy, resource management and accountability.

Results: Our imaging, dosimetry and treatment staff has been introduced to this new model with representation from all specialties and applications are currently being accepted for our first cohort in the program. There has been significant interest from the team since there is now a structured program to support growth as individuals and as professionals.

Conclusion: Organized mentoring within the institution provides a means of promoting excellence in clinical practice, opportunities for professional growth and development, and enhanced job satisfaction and retention. By investing in our staff, our program endeavors to provide optimal clinical outcomes for patients and families and augments the interdisciplinary team approach to health care.
