Purpose: Combining the advantages of high-precision 3D printing with characteristics of tissue equivalent materials in designing and fabricating a multi-functional multi-modality imaging phantom.
Methods: Computed Tomography (CT) images of a regular mouse were obtained and imported into Mimics 17.0 for digitally obtaining trunk bone model and skin shell model through 3D reconstruction. X-ray tissue-equivalent material (MDT-WHITE) was used for 3D printing the trunk bone and the ABS resin (ABS-P430TM XL Model, Ivory) material was used for skin. The skin shell was affixed to enclose the trunk bone, filled with soft-tissue equivalent gel consisting agarose, micro pearl powder, NaCl, and gadopentetate dimeglumine.
Results: The CT number of the trunk bone is 128 Â± 5 HU, and the CT number of the gel ranges 30 - 36 HU. The T1 relaxation time range measured for the gel is 380 - 500 ms, and T2 is 40 - 70 ms. In PET image, the tracer uptake area can be clearly observed.
Conclusion: The 3D printed mouse phantom with selected materials can be compatible for CT, MRI and PET imaging. It has wide clinical applications in quality control and dose verification for molecular small-animal imaging with low cost.
