Medical 3D printing is a process to fabricate anatomical structures from patient imaging data, which allows direct visualization and manipulation of the physical models. It has been used in various applications such as surgical planning, customized implants, surgical simulation, and medical education. Medical imaging plays a critical role in 3D printing as the process starts with volumetric patient images. The capability to create accurate patient-specific models in a timely fashion with reasonable cost gives 3D printing a unique niche in individualized medicine and drives significant growth of activities in practice, research and education. In this symposium, we invited three experts to review the current status, challenges and opportunities offered by this technology, as well as possible future directions. The synergy between medicine, engineering, and art in 3D printing technology will be described. The applications of 3D printing in image guided treatment simulation of vascular diseases. Using various 3D printing technologies to construct patient specific imaging phantoms will also be reviewed.

3. Construct attenuation correct, patient specific imaging phantoms using various 3D printing technologies
