Application of a Simple Optimisation Method in Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy for Thymoma Postoperative

Purpose: To explore the performance of a simple optimisation method: base dose function (BDF) in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for thymoma postoperative.

Methods: For 10 consecutive patients, two IMRT plans were created: 1)original IMRT plans (OIP), 2)the BDF plans (BDFP), in which were re-optimised based on the OIP. The dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters, conformity index (CI), and heterogeneity index (HI) for PTV, organs-at-risk (OAR), and monitor units (MUs) were evaluated.

Results: The BDF plan (BDFP) generated a better D98 and CI, lower Dmean, D2 and HI for PTV than the original IMRT plans (OIP) (P<0.05). BDFP had lower Lung of V5, heart of V20, V30, V40, Dmean (P<0.05), but no significant difference in Spinal cord (SC) and planning risk volume for SC (PRV-SC) as compared with OIP. BDFP increaseed the monitor units (MUs) by 13% (P<0.05) than OIP.

Conclusion: All of the plans were clinically acceptable. Compared with OIP, BDFP showing better target coverage, part of OARs sparing, while MUs was slightly increased.
